I am super excited to have Jennifer Estep by the blog today for another Fantasy Five Friday.
TBC: Could you give us the one sentence pitch of your book?
JE: Myths, magic, and monsters – that pretty well sums up DARK FROST, the third book in my Mythos Academy young adult urban fantasy series.
TBC: Since you have a fantasy novel coming out, the next question I obviously have to ask is: If you were a fantastical creature, which would you be?
JE: That’s a tough one. There are so many interesting fantasy creatures out there with so many cool and unusual powers. I think it would be fun to be a Fenrir wolf (from my Mythos Academy series) and be able to run through and explore the forests and mountains. It would also be cool to be a gryphon or even a Pegasus and be able to fly.
TBC: Do you have a favorite fantasy read?
JE: I enjoy reading all kinds of fantasy – epic, urban, young adult. It’s a great time to be a fan of the genre because there are so many good books and talented authors out there. One of my favorite fantasy books is Beauty by Robin McKinley. It’s a lovely retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale.
TBC: Generally speaking, which comes first: the world, the characters, or the plot?
JE: I almost always start with the characters. Usually, I’ll think of my heroine first – who she is, what her magic is, how she can use her magic to defeat the bad guys, her likes, dislikes, and interests. Once I have my heroine in mind, then I start to think about the plot and come up with the magic and world building.
TBC: They are always coming out with new editions of board games. If your book could be a special edition of any board game, which would you choose?
JE: I think it would be interesting if DARK FROST was made into a LIFE board game. I remember playing that game when I was younger, and I think it would be cool to come up with all the obstacles that you have to go through and the rewards you get, like “Win battle against Reapers – Move ahead five spaces.”
Here’s a bit about Dark Frost (Mythos Academy #3): I’ve seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I’m supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I’m just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill me—again.
Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objects—and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I’m also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead in the worst way. The Reapers are the baddest of the bad, the people who murdered my mom. So why do they have it in for me?
It turns out my mom hid a powerful artifact called the Helheim Dagger before she died. Now, the Reapers will do anything to get it back. They think I know where the dagger is hidden, but this is one thing I can’t use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for me—and I’m in for the fight of my life.
Now, I have one copy of Dark Frost for one lucky person. US only and ends June 12.
