Jack lives in a fantasy world. Really. He’s the son of the infamous Jack who stole the magic beans from the giant, and he’s working hard to restore his family’s reputation. He finds the perfect opportunity when a “princess” lands in front of him, apparently from the land of Punk, as her Punk Princess sweatshirt implies. May is from our world, and she’s utterly confused to find herself in the midst of the fairy tale characters she has read about. But Jack and May have more in common than they realize–and together, they embark on a hilarious and wild adventre in this highly accessible, modern middle grade fantasy novel.
What a darling little book Half Upon a Time was! It was such a fun fairy tale retelling and I loved the blending of so many different fairy tales to create the adventure May and Jack go on!
The story was so much fun to get caught up in! May and Jack have so much witty banter and clever dialogue that was a joy to read. I loved seeing where their story would end up next and what fairy tale would be woven into the story next. My one complaint about Half Upon a Time is the pacing – this book was very slow.
The characters were fun. May was so spunky and free spirited. Jack was a lot of fun too. I still am not entirely sure how I felt about Philip, he was an interesting character though. I loved Jack’s grandfather, he played such a small role in the book but he was way too funny! I hope to see more of him in the future.
The ending was such a shocker! James Riley really throws readers for a loop with a ending of Half Upon a Time. It was one of those your mouth hanging open while you sit there saying OMG type of endings. It also made me super excited for more of Jack and May’s story.
Half Upon a Time by James Riley was such a cute read – I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun read on a sunny summer day. I cannot wait to see where May and Jack’s story goes next, but if it was anything like Half Upon a Time, I am sure it will be great!
