I am super excited to be a part of the blog tour for Dualed by Elsie Chapman! Be sure to follow along with the rest of the tour. Also feel free to check out the chapter sampler!
I asked Elsie Chapman to talk a little about the research she did for Dualed and here is what she had to say:
I spent a lot of time looking up information on twins, of course. Even though I knew a lot of the specifics wouldn’t end up in the book, everything I learned would touch it in some form or other. For example, I wanted to learn about fingerprints. I already knew going in that twins are always born with different patterns, but could this be altered at all with some kind of biological interference during gestation? If I wanted them to have the same fingerprints for a specific plot point in the book, how could I go about creating that scenario to make it plausible? And if it wasn’t possible, could I use that limitation to go in another direction altogether? I also spent some time reading up on patterns behind technological advancements—though in a very broad sense, as most of it was way over my head. Also, I think having to imagine a future world does allow some leeway with certain aspects, so for those I had fun winging it.

The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.
Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.
Elsie Chapman’s suspenseful YA debut weaves unexpected romance into a novel full of fast-paced action and thought-provoking philosophy. When the story ends, discussions will begin about this future society where every adult is a murderer and every child knows there is another out there who just might be better.
